The Hurt Locker- Suicide Bomber Clip Notes

The Hurt Locker- Suicide Bomber clip notes

Q1. Explain two ways the characters and/ or events fit the action adventure genre.
·         Definitely represents what military men have to deal with in tense situations.
·         Stereotypically show each military man with no emotion or hard to deal with.
·         Suicide bombers and military people certainly fit in the action adventure genre to show the violence and tension that is similar to an action adventure film.
·         Sergeant James is typically shown as a tough, majestic American protagonist stereotypically showing Americans are tough and hard to deal with.

Q2. Explain how each of the following is used to create effects:
·         soundtrack
·         editing
·         Mise en scene
·         camerawork
Use examples from the extract. [30 marks]
Soundtrack - There is no soundtrack because it is to represent the tension and cowardice between each different character for example Sergeant James (Jeremy Renner) is put into a difficult situation of trying to remove a bomb on an innocent civilian and with no soundtrack in the background it shows the fear of Sergeant James trying to save the suicide bomber in a certain time.
Editing: The editing is fast paced when Jeremy Renner’s character is trying to take the bomb off the innocent civilian. It is also fast paced when the military men are trying to decide how to get the bomb off as the camera quickly goes back to the innocent civilian then back to the military. It is slow paced when the bomb explodes creating and exaggerated situation, differently showing what will probably happen in real life.
Mise en Scene – The mise en scene shows the places of what typically be shown in an action adventure film. There is a use of denigrated places and it is very midpoint lighting used to represent the situation happing in broad daylight which definitely stereotypically represents the violence happening in the Middle East countries in today society and situations like this is happening in broad daylight.
Camerawork –
Ø  Over the shoulder shot representing the conversations between the two characters.
Ø  Panning
Ø  Two shot
Ø  Long distance shot showing the suicide bomber

Q3. Discuss the ways in which people are represented in the extract.
Refer to stereotypes in your answer.
Use examples from the extract. [20 marks]

Jeremy Renner’s character (Sergeant James) is stereotypically shown as a tough, majestic protagonist who represents very well what a Sergeant would be like in the military and what happens in difficult situations. It also stereotypes that this scene is more of an American’s point of view of being in the Middle East. There are no other different accents (apart from the Middle East accent) but the majority of them were American characters.

Question 2 For Edge of Tomorrow

2. Explain how each of the following is used to create effects:
  • soundtrack
  • editing
  • mise-en-scène
  • camerawork

The soundtrack used to create effect in the Edge of Tomorrow is shown to:
·         Build up tension especially in difficult situations. The scene where they run to the vehicles, the soundtrack goes into a high pitch tone silence which builds tension and the audience waiting nervously for what is about to happen.
·         Playing majestic music to show Cage’s protagonist side as the strong and powerful status of the hero.
·         Less tense music on Vrataski showing that she is less of a hero then Cage, stereotypically showing that women are not involved into dangerous situations even though Vrataski character is a tough character, she is still somehow shown less important than the male role.

The soundtrack is situated differently when going into different scenes of The Edge of Tomorrow. The soundtrack is presented the same as what would appear in an action adventure film with over dramatic sounds and the fast pacing music heightening the fear in the audience ready to expect what is going to happen. The scene where Cage and Vrataski run to the vehicles, the soundtrack plays a high pitch tone silence to present the tension for what the audience is prepared to see what is about to happen. This shows that in tense, nervous atmosphere, this would have been expected in action adventure film to show the heroic and difficult situations that the protagonist has to make in order to save everyone else in the film. Another soundtrack to create effect in the Edge of Tomorrow is majestic music to show Cage’s protagonist side as the strong and powerful status of the hero whereas less tense music on Vrataski showing that she is less of a hero then Cage, stereotypically showing that women are not involved in dangerous situations even though Vrataski character is a tough character showing the strongest side of women, she is still somehow shown less important than the male role would be.

Editing
·         Slow – paste when Cage and Vrataski run to the car, builds up the tense atmosphere of escaping from the aliens.
·         Editing is quite fast paced when they are on the battlefield, showing fear has been heightened of emotions everywhere.

Mise-en scene
·         Battle uniform looks dirty and ragged showing that it has been used before
·         Everything is hard based showing that the building is more military underground (something that is always shown in action adventure films) than a normal military base.
·         Very dark and isolated showing the fear in each character

Camerawork
·         Panning of the fighting scenes
·         Mid- shot
·         Close –ups
·         High angle shot
·         Over the shoulder shot
·         Two shot discussing the plans on how to defeat the aliens or escape before resetting the day again.

·         Bird’s eye view
